Community Collaboration Grants 2014-15
Educational Equity Bus Pass Program is a collaboration between the School Success Transportation Coalition (SSTC), Way2Go, Dewitt Middle School, Boynton Middle School, Ithaca High School, and Lehman Alternative Community School. The program provides TCAT bus passes to ICSD high school and middle school students who can use them to participate in co-curricular activities they would otherwise be excluded from due to transportation barriers. The program supports school success, citing research showing that when students are engaged in activities of their choice, they have better school attendance and grades.
Farm to Table: Healthy Food for All People is a collaboration of the first grade teachers at South Hill Elementary School (Nancy Marino, Patricia Caughey, and Kathleen White) with Katie Bigness of NYS Agriculture in the Classroom at Cornell, and Audrey Baker of Wood’s Earth. Now in its second year, this year-long integrated curriculum has expanded to include the kindergarten and second grade students at South Hill, and to include the in-depth study of earthworms and composting, with the construction of an earthworm habitat in each classroom.
Distracted Driving Simulator is a collaboration between Craig Cowell, Ithaca High School Drivers Education teacher, Michelle Barber, Tompkins County Stop DWI, and Dana Haff, Ithaca City Police Department. The harsh realities of distracted driving will be demonstrated to teen drivers using the Arrive Alive simulator by Unite during the Ithaca High School Field Day. Each participant will have their picture taken in the simulator, and their photo will be placed on a keychain card which will be given to them as a keepsake, serving as a reminder to drive S.A.F.E (Sober and Free of Electronics) every time they grab their keys.
